PDA Police Para Sempre! (24 March 2023)

Two years ago Caleb, Sydney, and I traveled to the Denver Airport to bring a young man named Cameron Rusch to our home for a visit before Sydney began her missionary service. During the hour drive to Colorado Springs, Caleb saw a need to ensure adherence to his strict public display of affection (PDA) guidelines. A younger sibling council convened, a dire need was identified, and the PDA Police (PDAP) organization was born…

Caleb identifying the need for PDAP…

Or, had PDAP existed previously…?

…Forty years ago on a remote dairy farm in southeast Idaho a young boy ran incessantly from couch to window and back again. The excitement of the upcoming visit was almost too much for this seven-year old boy. Sure he had seen girls before, but girls belong at school and church meetings, not on the farm. And under no circumstances should they be spoken to…

Roger was not alone in his excitement. All six boys under the current age of Kelsey (17) were anxiously awaiting Eldon’s arrival from college with his girlfriend. Mem must have had no idea what she was getting into…

While it was only a few days, years must have passed in Mem’s mind before she finally jumped back into the car with Eldon for their return to BYU. She was given the smallest of the home’s three bedrooms from which she could hear the constantly-pacing feet and feel the penetrating eyes emanating from the living room. To her eternal credit, Mem actually dared leave that bedroom to face the Gestapo-like vigilance provided by this Greenwood-style PDAP. You might think an occasional bathroom break might have provided Mem some additional respite, but that was pretty difficult as another 10 individuals also relied on the home’s single bathroom. All in all, I don’t believe Eldon and Mem had more that a few seconds to themselves during that trip- a huge accomplishment that this 80’s era PDAP touts to this day!

Of course, some might say that the PDAP lost in the end. For despite PDAP’s best efforts, Mem agreed to marry Eldon, and together they raised a beautiful family.

And while the current PDAP fight is not yet over, judging from my most recent intel, it appears this new generation of PDAP may end up losing as well.

Even Sister Marah Olmstead is struggling to control her former missionary companion…

This evidence could be circumstantial, but it seems pretty incriminating…

But despite this setback, I am impressed by PDAP’s persistence and don’t expect them to give up the war for losing one battle. If anything, PDAP patrols are increasing in frequency and intensity.

A sibling council may be required to determine if this situation requires PDAP intervention…

In summary…

  • I suppose previous iterations of the PDA Police may have existed…

  • Jury’s out as to which iteration of PDAP is/was the most annoying…

  • Someday you might also be subject to a PDAP investigation…

  • Maybe it’s best that the PDAP occasionally lose…

    Love always,

    Dad

A PDAP loss in 1999 led to all this craziness (FYI- in 1999 the Forsberg PDAP was much strong than the Greenwood PDAP)…

Did the PDA Police exist in 1961? You might have to ask your grandparents.
